Russia to resume imports of Vietnamese seafood
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) says that it has almost completed procedures with the Russian authorities to allow Vietnamese businesses to resume exporting seafood to the Russian market.
About 90 percent of the work has been completed by MARD and the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Physio-sanitary Surveillance (VPSS), says MARD deputy minister Luong Le Phuong.
According to Mr. Phuong, the National Agro-forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Department (Naqifad) and VPSS have agreed to temporarily cut the number of exporters down to an acceptable level. Vietnam will provide a list of businesses that meet food hygiene and safety regulations for Russia to consider.
On March 16, a number of Vietnamese businesses flew to Moscow to sign export contracts with their Russian partners.
MARD has proposed that VPSS open a representative office in Vietnam to facilitate inspections and that a joint working group be set up to manage import-export activities between the two countries in the near future.
Russia decided to halt imports of Vietnamese seafood on December 20, 2008.
