Hai Phong customs investigates ivory smuggling

The Hai Phong Port Customs Department has launched an investigation into the illegal trafficking of 6.2 tonnes of elephant tusks.

Department officials discovered 114 cartons of raw ivory in a container on a Malaysian flag carrier, the Hubezo, on March 6.

The container was loaded in Tanzania in late January, went through Malaysia, and docked in Vietnam on February 28.

The tusks, each cut into two or three pieces, were determined to be from African elephants of various ages.

Customs officials say the shipment is the biggest so far seized in Hai Phong, and is valued at tens of millions of dollars.

Next week, the department will submit all files and evidence to local police for further investigation./.
