Exporters eye South America
Vietnamese businesses are eyeing the South American market, hoping to export certain competitive products like seafood, garments, and art and handicraft items, trade officials said.
According to the Viet Nam Trade Office in Brazil, the local government has allowed 60 Vietnamese businesses to export fisheries produce.
But Pham Ba Uong, Viet Nam's Trade Counsellor in Brazil, said they first need to acquire information from trade offices in the continent to understand the demands of the market.
According to the Viet Nam Trade Office in Brazil, the local government has allowed 60 Vietnamese businesses to export fisheries produce.
Uong said many Brazilian importers have come to his office looking for partners in Viet Nam to ship thousands of tonnes of catfish.
The Brazilian market, with its population of more than 190 million, offers new opportunities to Vietnamese companies in the face of shrinking markets because of the global economic crisis, he said.
Many Vietnamese companies have gone to Brazil in the last few years to look for business opportunities. Recently, Ha Noi administration officials and business executives attended a Viet Nam-Brazil business forum in the South American country.
At the forum, Nguyen Huu Thang, CEO of Ha Noi Trade Corporation, or Hapro, suggested exporting garments, household items, processed foods, beverages, art and handicraft items, ceramics, and electrical and electronic appliances.
Vietnamese businesses and their Brazilian partners discussed co-operation in tourism, education, labour supply, developing commercial and tourism complexes, resorts, and infrastructure, food processing, beverages, and consumer goods.
Trade between Viet Nam and Brazil rose 60 per cent annually between 2005 and 2008 to reach US$534.5 million.
For this year, the target is $500 million, and $1 billion in 2010.
Chile is also seen as a promising market, with the Vietnamese trade office there actively supporting businesses from back home.
It has informed Vietnamese businesses that Chile is looking to import from Viet Nam items like basa catfish, bottles to package liquor for export, footwear, bicycle parts, and others.
Nguyen Tuan Viet, Vietnamese trade counsellor in Chile, said to be competitive in the Chilean market, Vietnamese businesses should first establish their own websites to showcase their products and trademarks and improve quality.
