Mobile telecoms tests prove successful
The FPT Telecoms Joint Stock Company has successfully undergone trials of mobile WiMax, a wireless telecommunications technology that will expand the broadband mobile market and offer Internet services without a landline.
WiMax, or worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, provides wireless transmission using a variety of modes for portable and mobile Internet access.
The trials were conducted on Hanoi’s internet users of services such as video streaming, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and internet access with technical assistance from Japanese partners, NEC and Mitsubishi.
FPT Telecom Director Nguyen Dinh Hung says that WiMax has the potential to grow rapidly in Vietnam as the current level of physical broadband connections is only just 1.4 million households per 18 million and it would be expensive, time consuming and complex to deliver conventional landlines to every house.
Four other operators have also been granted licenses to experiment with the technology including EVN Telecom, Viettel, the VTC and the Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group’s VDC.
