PetroVietnam, FPT top VNR500 list

State owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) has topped the VNR500 for 2008, while the Financing and Promoting Technology joint-stock company (FPT) ranked first among the 500 largest private enterprises.

VNR500 is a listing of the country’s largest businesses, based on similar listings created by the Fortune magazine.

The National Convention Center in Hanoi Friday hosted the release of the latest VNR500 list as well as a VNR500 forum themed “Large Enterprises and the Economic Prospects in Vietnam in 2009”.

Online newswire VietNamNet and Vietnam Report Joint Stock Company had co-organized the annual event, which is in its second year.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan, Havard Business School’s Professor Robert Kaplan and hundreds of Vietnamese enterprises attended the ceremony.

The VNR500 forum participants shared experiences and discussed solutions for Vietnamese firms to develop the domestic market and helped them gain strength and participate competitively in the international arena.

“The difficult year of 2008 is the best opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to overcome challenges and assert themselves in 2009,” said Nguyen Anh Tuan, VietNamNet’s Editor-in-Chief.

Professor Kaplan presented the Balanced Scorecard model to the audiences and shared his thoughts on how to apply it within business circles in Vietnam.

Head of the Central Institute of Economic Management (CIEM) Dinh Van An said the global economy is predicted to continue slowing down with adverse impacts on many Vietnamese firms.

VNR500 is ranked on the basis of revenues, industry, profit, growth rates, labor, owner equity and total assets.
