Highlands coffee output halved
Coffee production in the Central Highlands’ Lam Dong Province in 2008 is down 40-50 percent compared to the last harvest, local coffee growers said Thursday.
Inclement weather and pests have adversely affected crop volume, while farmers have suffered around VND180 billion (US$10.5 million) in losses in recent months due to using bad fertilizer, local authorities said.
Coffee production in Vietnam, the world's second-biggest grower after Brazil, declined 14 percent in the year ending September 30 because of heavy rainfall and frost, according to the US Foreign Agricultural Service.
