Computer sales rebound in third quarter

Despite declines in sales during the second quarter of this year, the domestic personal computer market made a rebound in the third quarter, according to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), a market research company.

Total PC sales increased by 12.5 percent compared to last year.

According to the report, the PC market's resurgence was based on special sales programmes for the back-to-school period in mid-August. Additionally, PC distributors were well prepared for the higher demand which typically occurs during the second half of the year.

Vendors also launched new models during this period.

"We will see new technologies, new product lines and new pricing being introduced during the year-end period, which promises to give consumers more purchasing choices," said Nguyen My Phuong, a market research analyst at IDC Viet Nam.

The market also saw greater promotion by firms such as Asus, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer, Lenovo and CMS, especially for mini-notebook products. Total sales for mini-notebooks grew by 179.1 per cent compared to last year.

However, total market share for mini-notebook models remains small, especially for home-users.

At present, the HP continues to lead the Vietnamese market in sales with its strategy to target both the desktop and portable PC market. It also won key contracts with the education and financial sectors, as well as the Government. Acer moved up to second place with year-on-year growth of 54.5 per cent, while Lenovo dropped to third place.

Third-quarter sales of PCs in the consumer market had a stable year-on-year growth of 29.2 per cent. Commercial sales, however, grew only slightly at 1.2 per cent compared to last year. The small increase is attributed to a reduction in computer purchases by the Government and a general decrease in spending by small- and medium-sized enterprises.
