Singaporeans taste Vietnamese rice
FairPrice, the biggest retailer in Singapore, has decided to import much more rice from Vietnam after it found the country’s rice delicious and reasonably priced, said the group’s chief executive officer Tan Kian Chew.
Singaporeans have mainly used Thai rice for their meals. However, the recent surge in rice prices has changed their consumption habits, turning their attention to Vietnamese rice, which is of the same quality but cheaper.
The Vietnam Trade Bureau in Singapore said that Vietnam’s AAA type rice is sold at six Singapore dollars per five kilos, 70 cents cheaper than Thai rice of the same kind.
There have been slight declines in rice prices but Singaporean consumers and producers still have to buy rice at a price 30 percent higher than the same period last year.
