Plastics and rubber industries urged to develop

The “Plastics and Rubber Vietnam 2008” international exhibition opened at the Ho Chi Minh City International Exhibition and Convention Center (HIECC) on October 21. This is the second exhibition of its kind in Vietnam, which helps develop the plastics and rubber industries in the country.

According to the organising board, the event aims to help Vietnam’s plastics and rubber enterprises apply advanced technology and  equipment in diversifying product designs in order to meet the increasing demand of both local and export markets.

A seminar entitled “Plastics industry - new trends in the region and Vietnam’s development strategies” was also held during the exhibition, helping Vietnamese and international enterprises to share experiences, seek investment opportutnies and sign economic contracts.

Vietnam now has more than 2,000 enterprises operating in the field of plastics and rubber, which have attracted the attention of many manufacturers of machines and equipment.

The event drew the participation of 39 local enterprises and 169 companies from 20 nations and territories in the world including Austria, Belgium, Germany, China, Hongkong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Holland, the Phillipines, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, the UK and the US.

The event, which will run until October 23, was co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Bangkok Exhibition Services Company and Messe Dussldorf Asia.

The plastic industry aims to gain an annual average growth rate of 18-20 percent by 2010 to become a major industry with an estimated total output of 4,200,000 tonnes of products such as packing, construction materials, household plastics and hi-tech plastics.

This information was provided by Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Thanh Bien at a briefing meeting on exports over the past nine months, held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Strategic planners said the sector should maximize the use of domestic materials, apply new material technology, develop high-quality products, diversify their designs, and improve its competitiveness with the aim of meeting domestic demand, boosting exports and raising capital for the state budget as well as facilitating regional and global integration.

Mr Bien emphasized that the plastic industry must focus on material production, hi-tech commodities and plastics for export, and waste treatment.

The Vietnamese rubber industry has set a target of doubling the current acreage of rubber plantation to 700,000ha by 2010 to yield 520,000 tonnes of latex, while stepping up the manufacture and export of industrial rubber.
