Vinamilk says its products safe amid toxic milk scare

Vinamilk, the country's biggest dairy processor, announced on Wednesday that the industrial chemical melamine had not been found in its product samples.

Tran Bao Minh, deputy general director of Vinamilk, said his company had sent 14 dairy samples to the Center for Analysis Services and Experiment of the Department of Science and Technology for testing in the wake of the toxic milk scare.

"The testing results show our company's products contain no melamine," Minh said.

He said inspectors from the Ministry of Health on Wednesday took samples of Vinamilk products at its Thong Nhat and Hanoi factories for testing.

Minh said his company imported milk materiaIs from the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and the EU which have strict regulations on food hygiene.

Along with Vinamilk, other dairy giants like Frieslandfoods from Holland with the popular brand Dutch Lady has also sent samples of their products for testing.

Up to the country's north, inspectors from the Ministry of Health on Wednesday discovered Hanoi Milk had imported 375 tons of milk from China for resale to other companies for processing.

The inspectors ordered the company to stop selling this milk until tests for melamine have been done.

The ministry on Wednesday reached agreement with the steering committee for food hygiene and safety to destroy all products imported from the 22 Chinese dairy firms found to have their products adulterated by melamine.

The trading of other Chinese brands must also be suspended to do tests, they said.

The ministry also said the concentration of melamine in YiLi Pure Milk products was 25.34 mcg/l and that it would announce the test results for other brands soon.

HCMC health inspectors on Wednesday found some pollution-causing dairy processors in Binh Thanh and Phu Nhuan districts.

Dai Quang Company at 285 No Trang Long Street in Binh Thanh District was found to break the Government's regulations on food hygiene.

Truong Thi Thuy Mai, head of the inspection team, said the company's facilities were adulterated by polluted water, poor bottle cleansing, and no cold storage.

On the same day, the inspection team examined other companies in Phu Nhuan District.

Market monitors in District 6 uncovered a warehouse with 5.3 tons of powder milk, 15 tons of cacao powder and 5.1 tons of unlabeled milk powder at 336/1 Nguyen Van Luong. The warehouse owner said the milk belonged to Duc Long Hang Co., which owned 3.2 tons of milk powder detained by market monitors in District 10 on Tuesday.
