Vietnam projects win US$400,000 from global competition
Two of Vietnam’s projects won US$200,000 each in the 2008 Global Development Marketplace (DM2008), which took place in Washington from September 24 to 26.
One project concerned using organic fertilizer in cultivating rice and the other was for taking advantage of straw to produce construction materials. Both projects convinced judges and sponsors about the benefit they could bring to the community, as well as the positive impact they could have on the environment.
The event, organized by the World Bank and co-sponsored by the Global Environment Facility, the International Finance Corporation, the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation and GTZ, attracted 1,768 projects from 144 nations worldwide. Vietnam had four projects of the 100 chosen in the final round.
Some US$4 million has been granted to 22 projects from 16 countries. Since 1998, DM has granted nearly US$46 million for creative projects.
