Quality of New Biofuel Yet to Be Certified

Shortly after a directive stopped the sale of ethanol-based Gasohol E5 last week, quality control agency STAMEQ has said it has not received any information about its quality and technical standards from the sole importer of the biofuel.

General Director Ngo Quoc Viet of Directorate for Standards and Quality (STAMEQ) told SGGP that the PetroVietnam Biofuel Joint Stock Co. (PVB) has also not carried out any tests on the effect of the new fuel on vehicles in Viet Nam.

As of now, only standards for pure ethanol fuel were available in the TCVN Standard system, Viet said.

Currently, STAMEQ is awaiting results from the inspections carried out by the Ministry of Industry and Trade before issuing any quality certification for the new fuel.

It is only after such certification that the fuel will be sold to the public, Viet said.

The government had stopped the sale of newly-launched Gasohol E5 after it found that PVB was selling it to consumers not stipulated under the pilot project.
