Project to reduce effects of natural disaster praised
A project run by NGOs of Vietnam and Australia to alleviate vulnerabilities caused by natural calamities has been judged as the most effective of its kind in the storm-prone coastal province of Quang Ngai after three years of operation.
The judgements were passed at a workshop held in Quang Ngai province on September 23 to share experiences with experts from foreign non-Governmental organizations and the AusAID office in Vietnam .
The project, based on the Vietnam-Australia Non-Governmental Organisation Cooperation Agreement (VANGOCA), signed in June 2004, has helped almost 2,400 poor families to improve their incomes through animal husbandry, coastal sea products netting, fish sauce production, fish farming, mushroom production, vegetable cultivation and the managing of small-sized businesses.
With assistance from the World Vision-Vietnam, the project has been implemented since May 16, 2005 and has helped 41 villages build a range of infrastructure facilities capable of withstanding storms and floods, such as day - care centres, medical stations, concrete bridges and rural roads. The project has also supplied motor boats, life buoys, electricity generators and early warning systems for targeted communities within the programme.
The total cost of the project is just under 1.2 million USD.
