Northern key economic region needs 8.3mil trained workers

A conference was held in Hai Phong city on August 31 to discuss the development of human resources through vocational training to meet businesses’ demand in the northern key economic region.

The event was co-organised by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) and Hai Phong municipal People’s Committee and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, and leaders from other cities and provinces.

The northern key economic region comprises seven provinces and cities namely Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Vinh Phuc and Bac Ninh

Duong Duc Lan, deputy head of the general department for vocational training under the MoLISA delivered a report, saying that according to a report, the northern key economic region has more high quality labour resources than in other regions. He quoted statistics released in 2007 and said the rate of skilled workers in the region accounted for nearly 40 percent of the country’s total workforce and nearly 7.7 million people were involved in business activities.

In addition, the region also has top class vocational training centres compared to other regions. It is forecast that to fulfill its socio-economic development targets for 2010, the demand for human resources in the region will be almost 8.3 million people.

Mr Lan also proposed a number of solutions including setting up a list of key jobs to keep up with regional and world standards and establishing information centres on the labour market to meet the demand of enterprises, especially foreign-invested enterprises. He also encouraged local and foreign investors to pour their investment into vocational training. He unveiled his department’s goal of training workers according to the demands of businesses by 2015.

Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan said it is necessary to upgrade training methods, develop effective training programmes and revise forecast about supply and demand of the labour force.

The deputy PM also asked localities and training centres to quickly set up trading floors to explore businesses’ demands and develop appropriate training programmes.
