HCM City recalls tainted Chinese milk

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health (DoH) confiscated all Yili milk products stored at Kim An Co., Ltd, an import company on September 22.

Yili milk is among the milk products from China currently banned due to melamine contamination.

Nearly 18 tonnes of Chinese-based Yili Pure Milk was imported to Vietnam last month, reported the company.

Some 840 litres of the milk products was distributed to 125 stores across the city, mostly sold in stores in Districts 10 and 11 as well as in Phu Nhuan and Tan Binh districts.

Kim An Co. tried to recall all YiLi’s products from stores in the market once informed of China’s milk scandal, said Phan Thi Tuy Van, the company’s director, adding that there were still 10 stores which needed follow up.

Kim An Co. also had milk samples tested for melamine contamination, Van said, confirming that test results would be available next week.

Health officials advised consumers who had brought YiLi’s milk to stop drinking it and wait for the test results from the appropriate agency, adding that buyers can also return the milk products to the store or distributor.

In a related event, the Southern Environmental Police Department (C36B) has shut down the A Chau (Asia) Food Co., Ltd (AC Food) for producing low-quality and fake milk on a large scale.

According to the HCM City Institute of Public Health and Hygiene, the amount of nutrients in the milk sample is 98 percent less than those claimed on the product’s deceptive labels.

Over 52,296 milk products of the company were produced and distributed to 18 provincial markets in the Mekong Delta over the last few months.

In another case, the market management team of Go Vap District found more than a tonne of Chinese-based milk products and others from Thailand and Germany lacking in commercial invoices and certificates on food safety standards at the food enterprise Khuong Nguyen.
