Close to 58,000 workers sent abroad in eight months
Nearly 58,000 Vietnamese labourers were sent to work abroad in the first eight months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 4.3 percent, according to the Overseas Labour Management Department.
The number of guest workers leaving the country this year is expected to reach 85,000, the department said.
The largest market for Vietnamese guest workers remains Taiwan . It was followed by the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Macau and Arab Saudi.
For the USA , Australia and the Czech Republic, the number of Vietnamese workers was limited because of their strict professional and foreign languages skills requirements and immigration procedures.
In order to raise guest workers’ skills, the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs has recently adopted a pilot project to train workers under labour export orders.
The project will be carried out from now until 2010 with a total investment capital of 10 billion VND (over 600,000 USD).
Under the project, labour export enterprises will order vocational training schools to train workers in jobs that are in high demand in the international market such as welding, hotel and restaurant services, and health care.
Around 500,000 Vietnamese people are working in 40 countries and territories worldwide.
