Rubber exports to fetch US$1.5 billion in 2008

Vietnam’s rubber exports are likely to reach US$1.5 billion in 2008, according to the Vietnam Rubber Association.

Despite the decrease in the global oil prices, the price of rubber still remains high at US$2,800 – US$3,000 per tonne.

Experts say that rubber processors and growers will make a big profit this year as it costs them only US$1,800 to produce a tonne of rubber. In the first half of this year, Vietnamese businesses exported 236,252 tonnes of rubber, earning nearly US$600 million. Currently, south-eastern, central highland and other central regions are harvesting rubber.

Vietnam is the world’s fourth largest rubber exporters, after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. It ranks fifth in the world in rubber output, after Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India.
