Improving the value of industrial production

According to the Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang, it is necessary to reduce production costs by cutting down on the amount of materials consumed. This means that it is important to upgrade equipment and technologies gradually in order to reduce the average consumption of materials.

One of the notable points in developing industries in the first six months of this year is the low industrial added value which reaches only 8.3 percent. How can the efficiency of industrial production in the remaining months of the year be improved.

A reporter from Radio the Voice of Vietnam interviewed Vu Huy Hoang, Minister of Industry and Trade about the issue.

Reporter: What do you think about the country’s industrial added value being 8.3 percent in the first six months of this year?

Mr Hoang: In the past six months, the value of industrial production has continued to grow but at lower rate than in previous years, especially the added value growth. This is attributed to high input and intermediary costs and heavy dependence on imported raw materials such as crude oil. Due to fluctuations in domestic prices, although the production value has decreased slightly, the added value of the industrial and construction sectors has reduced remarkably compared to previous years.

Reporter: Vietnam’s processing industry accounts for a huge proportion compared to other industries. What do we do to overcome this?

Mr Hoang: This is another reason affecting the quality of growth in the industrial sector including added value. Currently, the government is asking the MoIT to speed up agricultural production restructuring by focusing on highly added value projects and limiting projects to exploit and consume raw materials. These moves have been clearly reflected through the industrial development plans and strategies approved by the Prime Minister and the MoIT recently.

Reporter: What measures will raise the value of industrial production from now until the end of the year as there has been a rise in the price of materials ?

Mr Hoang: The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has been guiding various economic groups and enterprises to minimize their production costs through effective and close management as well as the application of new technologies.

Reporter: How will the ministry do to help enterprises overcome electricity shortages?

Mr Hoang: The government has permitted enterprises in every economic sectors, both domestic and foreign, to build and operate power plants independently or in the form of BOT.

Our ministry is responsible for the management of electricity production and business. Therefore, we have worked with the relevant ministries and sectors to pinpoint and solve issues within our area of responsibility, especially the lack of coordination between electricity investors and EVN (the Electricity of Vietnam Group). The issues that go beyond our jurisdiction will be reported to the Prime Minister in due time.

The ministry is actively encouraging power plants to connect to the national grid, especially in the framework of a master plan for the electricity network. We consider providing sufficient electricity for the national economy as our most urgent task at present.
