First “Vietnamese Workers’ Day” held in RoK

Almost 1,000 Vietnamese guest workers from over 4,000 businesses in the Republic of Korea flocked to capital Seoul on August 3 for a get-together hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Shinhan Bank.

Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan praised the Vietnamese embassy’s initiative for the first ever “Vietnamese Workers’ Day in the RoK”, saying it was evidence of the Government’s special attention to the guest workers’ community abroad.

Ngan, who led a MOLISA delegation to the RoK to attend the event, described the RoK as a potential labour market with massive employment opportunities for Vietnamese workers.

Ngan called on Vietnamese guest workers to work harder, abide by the resident country’s law, adopt the industrial working style and draw more professional experiences and skills useful to their work and the nation back home.

“Vietnamese guest workers should also become people-to-people diplomats to promote friendship between the two nations,” she said.

She urged them to strictly follow their labour contracts’ requirements and return home right after the contracts are expired in order to make it easy for fellow workers to get jobs in the RoK.

The Head of the Labour Policy Department under the Ministry of Labour of the RoK, Lee Jae-Kap, said Vietnamese guest workers have become part of the local community and contributed considerably to the economic development of the RoK.

Vietnamese guest workers’ industriousness, skillfulness and smartness in mastering technology and sciences have been recognised by RoK enterprises, putting them at the top of the list of foreign immigrants receiving RoK working visas under the Employment Permit System, he added.

A representative from the Shinhan bank, the major sponsor of the event, said RoK partners expected that the Vietnam Workers’ Day would promote mutual understanding and boost cooperation between the two countries.

On this occasion, Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Tien Van presented certificates of merit for 10 best Vietnamese guest workers and handed over letters of thanks to five RoK enterprises hiring a large number of Vietnamese guest workers.

Official statistics showed that the Vietnamese guest worker community in the RoK reached close to 55,000 so far. The first seven months of this year alone saw 8,000 guest workers receive working visas into the RoK.

Vietnamese labourers have mostly worked in the production sector, engineering and construction in the RoK. A small number of them have been employed for agricultural production and aquaculture.

In 2007, Vietnamese guest-workers in the RoK remitted home 500 million USD out of 1.7 billion USD remittances by the entire overseas Vietnamese guest workers community.
