Tra catfish exports to Russia surge in June
Vietnam ’s tra catfish exports to Russia reached more than 14.3 million USD in June, representing a 23-fold year-on-year increase in volume and a 21-fold rise in value.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) says the sudden growth has made Russia Vietnam’s sixth largest seafood importers.
Ukraine is also viewed as a potential market for catfish with a 14-fold year-on-year increase in value, reaching 16.5 million USD.
In the six-month period, Vietnam exported more than 27,000 tonnes of seafood to Ukraine , earning nearly 48 million USD.
Despite a small decrease in volume, the EU market was still Vietnam ’s largest seafood importers. It was followed by Japan with an increase of 29 percent in volume and 20 percent in value.
In the first half of the year, Vietnam earned more than 1.9 billion USD from seafood exports, up 16 percent over the same period last year. The country’s seafood export turnover is expected to reach 4.2 billion USD in 2008, with 1.5 billion USD from shrimp, and 1.2 billion USD from catfish.
