Simplifying administrative procedures for taxation on SMEs
Reforming administrative procedures for taxation on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is the main topic of a seminar held in Hanoi on July 17.
The seminar was co-organised by the General Department of Taxation and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Deputy Director of the General Department of Taxation, Le Hong Hai said Vietnam now has 180,000 enterprises operating in the private sector and 3 million of independent business households. However, most of the enterprises are operating on a small scale, and the ratio of state budget collection from these enterprises is not high. In addition, as their management skills and technological know-how remain limited, they often sell goods directly to consumers who are ready to pay in cash.
Richard Stern, Director of the FIAS programme said administrative reform of procedures for taxation should focus on improving tax tools, strengthening transparency, simplifying procedures, and providing services for SMEs.
At the seminar, the department and IFC signed a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation in simplifying administrative procedures for taxation on SMEs in Vietnam within a period of 30 months (from July 2008 to December 2010).
The department said it has mapped out a plan to implement a project on simplifying administrative procedures in the area of state management. The plan aims to simplify administrative procedures for taxation and tax schedules for enterprises, especially for those operating in the private sector.
