Prices of milk products rise again in July
Milk prices have risen 5-7 per cent due to various economic factors, according to local milk producers and distributors. At present, domestic milk producers have to import large quantities of powdered milk to use as raw materials for their products and they claim to have no other choice.
A representative of Dutch Lady Viet Nam said the price surge was unavoidable due to the change in the Vietnamese dong and US dollar exchange rates, and the recent rise in the costs of raw materials, freighting and packaging.
He added that his company sent new price lists to agents and supermarkets last month in preparation for July's price hike.
Since the start of the year, many milk producers have increased their prices several times, save Dutch Lady and a handful of others who have waited till now to bow to the inevitable. The last mass increase of 5-6 per cent was in April.
Prices of Dutch Lady Viet Nam's various products have increased by 5-7 per cent, and a 900g tin is now up VND20,000-30,000.
Friso powdered milk is up 6 per cent, and 900g tins have risen from VND155,000 to VND171,000.
Some milk producers have opted to keep prices the same, but surreptitiously reduce the weights hoping only the most observant consumers will read the fine print.
A tin of Abbott's Similac Mom used to weigh 400g, now it's 300g. The same is true of Vinamilk and Dumex's products.
