Nation hopes to make $1b from tea by 2020
Viet Nam expects to fulfil the target of US$1 billion in tea revenue by 2020, with $700 million of it coming from exports, according to an official of the Viet Nam Tea Association.
Nguyen Kim Phong, chairman of the association said the tea sector must continue developing current markets while seeking new ones.
"In addition, the sector should produce high quality tea at reasonable prices."
Phong said that the nation exported 40,000 tonnes of tea in the first half of the year, with $53.5 million in revenue, a 2 per cent increase over the same period last year.
Viet Nam was expected to earn $130 million from tea exports this year, he added.
The association had implemented a strong development strategy, involving industrialising tea processing, improving capacity and quality, and instituting training for tea farmers, he said.
To increase the reputation of the national tea trademark, CheViet, on domestic and world markets, Phong said that all tea products possessing the national trademark must meet national quality standards.
Viet Nam’s land and climate make it uniquely suitable for high quality tea development. It is the fifth largest country for tea output and exports in the world, and presently, 35 provinces in Viet Nam, covering 128,000ha, produce tea for 700 dried tea companies.
Vietnamese tea is marketed in 110 countries and territories in the world. The national trademark has been registered in 73 countries and regions.
