Agro-forestry-fishery products fetch 7.6 billion USD
Vietnam raked in more than 7.6 billion USD from the export of agro-forestry-fishery products in the first half of 2008, a year-on-year rise of 24.8 percent, thanks to increased prices and demands in the world market.
Farm produce earned the largest turnover of 4.2 billion USD, up 31 percent from the same period last year, followed by seafood with 1.9 billion USD, posting an increase of 16 percent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, forest products contributed over 1.5 billion USD, or a rise of 21 percent.
Rice exports saw a rise of just 5.3 percent in volume, but enjoyed a two-fold increase in value due to skyrocketed prices. Other agricultural staples, such as coffee, rubber, tea, cashew nuts and pepper, recorded high growth despite decreased volumes.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported the country’s six-month agro-forestry-fishery production value reached close to 94 trillion VND, to which agricultural production contributed over 68.7 trillion VND and fishery, around 21 trillion VND.
To maintain the sector’s stable growth, the ministry will take uniform measures in the remaining months, including ensuring the sufficient supply of seeds and materials for agricultural production, stepping up livestock breeding, developing craft villages and boosting exports.
