Vietnam to start importing coal from 2012

After matching coal production to domestic demands, the Vietnam National Coal Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) said the country will be short of 10.8-11 million tonnes per year on average during the period 2012-2017.

Vietnam will have to import coal from 2012 to the tune of 34 million tonnes by 2015, then 114 million tonnes by 2020 and 228 million tonnes by 2025.

Vinacomin expects the coal consumption for electricity production will reach 32.5 million tonnes by 2012, 7.9 million tonnes more than the country can produce. The figure will increase to nearly 44 million tonnes by 2015, with a shortage estimated at 11.4 million tonnes.

The Group has informed the Government that domestic coal sources for coal-fuelled thermal-electricity projects in Vung Ang 3, Hai Phong 3 and other localities such as Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Phu Tho and Nghe An will dry up.

While introducing effective measures to overcome the difficulties, Vinacomin still needs more investment to open new mines and apply high technologies to gather all coal dust and ash.
