City likely to see June CPI rise slow to 3.37%

HCM City’s consumer price index (CPI) is expected to increase by 2.37 per cent in June, 1.97 per cent lower than last month’s figure, the city’s statistics bureau has said.

By the end of this month, the CPI is forecast to rise 16.48 per cent over last December, a record increase compared with previous years.

However, the CPI has fallen each month this year, except for a sharp rise in May when there were strong fluctuations in the prices of rice and construction materials.

Statistics show the CPI in February rose by 3.83 per cent but gradually fell to 1.92 per cent in March and to 1.82 per cent in April.

The index then jumped to 4.24 per cent in May and slid down to 2.37 per cent in June.

The highest growth in CPI can be seen in food and foodstuffs, beverages and essential goods.

Gold prices, fluctuating wildly because of global gold prices coupled with the US dollar exchange rate, have reached VND18.72 million per tael.

US dollar prices on the black market shot up to VND19,300 a dollar as of yesterday while the average inter-bank exchange rate stood at VND16,454 a dollar.
