Airport terminal ahead of schedule

The Government wants the new 849 million USD Terminal 2 at Hanoi ’s Noi Bai Airport finished one year ahead of schedule and will change the way relevant State agencies operate to do so.

At a meeting Wednesday, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai asked the Ministry of Transport to coordinate with other relevant ministries, offices and Hanoi authorities to commission a range of architectural designs for the terminal.

The Ministry of Transport now wants five different designs, up from the three originally planned, with the hope that this will speed up the decision making process.

Architects were asked to come up with a design for the terminal that is modern and capable of coping with an expected increase in air travellers arriving in or departing from Hanoi in the future.

The hastening of the project is to avoid the airport becoming overloaded with passengers in coming years.

To further spur on the project, the ministry is considering reworking the feasibility report that clarifies the tender process and construction supervision. The project’s investment capital may also be recalculated.

The terminal, which has a 120,000sq.m footprint and will be four stories high, is expected to welcome 10 million passengers per year.

When Terminal 2 is put into operation, Terminal 1, which has an annual capacity of six million passengers, will cease serving international flights and will shift to domestic flights only.

To satisfy anticipated aviation growth in the near future, the Ministry of Transport will also transform Cat Bi Airport in Hai Phong City into an international airport.

In addition, the ministry is seeking investment for van Don Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
