DHL-VNPT Express in a hurry to fortify its market leader status

Current economic challenges have impacted the profitability of many companies in Vietnam.

DHL-VNPT Express is willing to go the extra distance to meet customers’ needs

Despite these challenges, DHL-VNPT Express continues to see vast business opportunities in the country.

The world’s leading express service provider has invested and expanded its services in Vietnam in recent years, signaling an increased emphasis placed on growing DHL’s presence in the country. DHL Express has launched new direct flight services, connecting inbound and outbound shipments to Vietnam, bringing greater business opportunities for Vietnam-based businesses.

The new service sees the Boeing 727F providing 22,000 kilogrammes of inbound and outbound uplift to Vietnam five days a week. The aircraft will fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Hong Kong and return to Ho Chi Minh City, providing DHL customers with unprecedented access to the company’s Asia Air Network and its Central Asia Hub in Hong Kong. This will also improve the access to the key Vietnamese trade lanes of Europe and the United States. The new direct flight will efficiently bring wider business opportunities to Vietnam-based exporters and the local small-and-medium sized enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City.

On November 3, 2011 DHL-VNPT Express opened its new $1.4 million Hanoi airside facility at the Noi Bai International Airport. The newly-built 1,450 square metre state-of-the-art facility has a capacity to process 4,700 inbound and outbound shipments daily, allowing for faster recovery and shorter processing times. The new facility also doubles up as a service centre supporting the neighbouring Vinh Phuc, Soc Son and Thang Long industrial zone areas. The traveling time from the gateway to these areas will improve by approximately one hour.

DHL Express began operating in Vietnam in 1988 initially with an agency agreement with the VNPT Group and later with the joint venture which formed DHL-VNPT Express. The new investments made in 2011 underscored the long term commitment of DHL Express in Vietnam, allowing this express service provider to tap the increasing business opportunities created from Vietnam’s rising import and export activities.

“The global demand for Vietnamese products and the Vietnamese market’s demand for imported goods have never been higher,” said Christopher Ong, general director of DHL-VNPT Express.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade forecasted total export turnover in 2011 was $96 billion, a year-on-year increase of 33 per cent and was the highest level so far.

This figure exceeded the National Assembly’s target of 23 per cent for the year. Meanwhile, the country’s total import-export turnover has exceeded $200 billion, twice that of the 2010’s gross domestic product. Vietnam also has surpassed the Philippines to hold to fifth position in terms of imports and exports in South East Asia, just after Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. As international specialists, DHL Express has advantages to meet the demand of clients operating in Vietnam through its global network.

“As international specialists, DHL offers our customers unparalleled levels of connectivity through our global network. This is fundamental in delivering superior logistic solutions to our customers,” said Ong. “For DHL, our strength is our unmatched global network composed of more than 220 countries and territories and about 275,000 dedicated employees worldwide,” added Ong.

DHL Express has been enjoying the good working relationship with VNPT and will continue to work together for the coming years. Currently, DHL provides approximately 77 flights in domestic market and 64 international flights every week. The launch of the new direct flights to Ho Chi Minh City came at an opportune time as businesses can ride on the growing demands to expand their businesses overseas.
