Vietnam’s seafood export sector to face challenges in 2012

Vietnam’s seafood sector will run short of capital and material resources and face challenges of meeting food hygiene and safety requirements, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

VASEP predicts that demand for Vietnamese shrimp in the European market will not be high due to fluctuations in this market while tra fish exports to the EU market will likely decrease on account of the eurozone economic crisis.

However, despite such challenges, Vietnam’s total seafood exports will keep rising to earn some US$6.5 billion this year, up US$0.4 billion over last year.

VASEP has recommended a zoning plan for aquaculture areas, application of advanced technologies in production and strict control of food safety and hygiene to promote exports.

To support export businesses, it has submitted eight proposals to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
