Samsung sets R&D operation in Vietnam

Samsung Electronics is planning to build a research and development centre in Hanoi to develop new hi-tech products in Vietnam.

Samsung’s investments are giving the local high-tech sector a big lift

Kim Yong Seok, planning director of Samsung Electronics Vietnam, said the company was seeking a location for the investment plan which had been proposed to Hanoi People’s Committee. “We have not found a location for building the research and development (R&D) centre. But, surely it will be built within Hanoi,” said Seok.

Samsung Electronics Vietnam has not finalised the total investment cost, but Seok said the infrastructure construction cost was around $20 million and it expects to start construction in the first half of this year and finish mid next year.

“Till 2015, this centre will recruit from 1,500 to 2,000 engineers for developing new products in Vietnam,” Seok said.

The R&D centre is a part of Samsung’s $1.5 billion investment plan in Vietnam till 2015 in order to make Vietnam one of its largest manufacturing bases in the world. The firm is now operating a $670 million mobile phone and camera manufacturing factory in Bac Ninh province.

The Vietnamese government last year gave Samsung the highest tax incentives for all products made at this factory. In return, the Korean firm pledged to disburse entirely $1.5 billion of investment plan in Vietnam and use one per cent of its revenue each year for R&D operations.

Seok said one per cent of revenue was a very big amount of money because the company’s revenue would increase. Last year, the revenue of Samsung’s factory in Bac Ninh was $5.8 billion and it expects to reach $16 billion in export turnover in 2015.

In addition to Samsung Electronics, some of multi-national firms are setting R&D centres in this country as Vietnam offers an expanding market and availability of skilled personnel.

Hewlett-Packard, the world’s largest technology firm, last year announced an R&D centre in Quang Trung Software Park in Ho Chi Minh City, its first in the Southeast Asian region.

German-based Robert Bosch, the world’s leading supplier of automotive technology and services, also has an R&D centre in Saigon Hi-tech Park in Ho Chi Minh City.
