Second Son La generator connects to national grid

The second generator at the Son La hydropower plant was successfully connected to the national grid on Apr. 21.

Addressing the launch ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung stressed the pride the country had in the Son La plant, one of the biggest hydropower projects in the region.

The plant was put into operation three years ahead of schedule and was designed, constructed, and put into operation under Vietnamese leadership, he said.

The first generator of the plant had already supplied a remarkable amount of electricity to the country, and the official connection of the second generator with a capacity of 400MW would make a major contribution to the national grid, Dung said.

The PM applauded the efforts of the designers, constructors and all officials and workers for trying their best to complete the second generator ahead of schedule.

Stressing that the imminent tasks remained difficult, Dung wished investors, designers, constructors, officials and workers of the project good luck as they continued speeding up the installation of the remaining generators.

The third and fourth generators are scheduled to be put into operation in August and December this year, respectively.

He instructed the project's investor to work closely with local authorities to take care of local residents who had been resettled for the construction of the project.

The Son La project officially began in 2005, and when it is completed, a total of six generators will produce around 10.2 billion kWh per year.

The second generator is expected to help reduce power shortages during the dry season by supplying at least 1.1 billion kWh.

The remaining four generators are expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

On the same day, Dung visited Ban Chat hydropower plant in northern mountainous province of Lai Chau and Huoi Quang hydropower plant in Son La.

Focus on agriculture

Continuing a working visit to northern mountainous areas, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung yesterday stopped-over in Lao Cai and Lai Chau Provinces.

Speaking at a meeting with key cadres in Lao Cai, Dung asked them to focus on agricultural development, the province's strongest potential.

The Prime Minister said mineral resources should be used to help turn the province into an industrial development centre.

He also ordered the provincial leadership to develop a comprehensive plan for the development of the Sa Pa tourism industry.

Dung said that in the past five years, Lao Cai was among the 10 provinces having the highest provincial competitive index (PCI).

In Lai Chau Province, the PM reiterated the Government's commitment for it to achieve rapid and sustainable socio-economic development, particularly in the resettlement of villagers necessary for the construction of a hydro power plant, and in the processing of rare earths and the replanting of forests.

Dung spoke highly of efforts made by the province in the past seven years since it was separated from Dien Bien Province. Lai Chau is the home to more than 11,000 new households resettled to make way for the construction of the Son La, Lai Chau, Huoi Quang and Ban Chat hydro power plants.
