Lao Airlines to increase international flight prices

Lao Airlines will increase the prices of its international flights as the cost of fuel continues to rise, but prices for domestic flights will remain stable.

The airline is currently collecting information on each flight and will announce the new prices next week, Marketing Manager of Lao Airlines Mr. Sithideth Duangsith told Vientiane Times yesterday.

“We don't yet know by what percentage the prices of tickets will increase but we are determined to remain cost-friendly for our customers,” he said.

According to Mr. Sithideth, at present, the price of a one-way ticket from Vientiane to Bangkok, Thailand, is about US$115, while a return ticket is US$243. A one-way ticket from Vientiane to Hanoi, Vietnam, sets you back US$125, while a return costs US$245. A one-way ticket from Vientiane to Kunming, China, costs US$155 and a round-trip US$305.

On the domestic front, a one-way ticket from Vientiane to Luang Prabang or Xieng Khuang province costs 695,000 kip, and a return ticket 1,330,000 kip. A one-way ticket from the capital to Pakxe, Champassak province, costs 1,450,000 kip and a return 1,995,000 kip.

These domestic flight prices are fair for customers, especially locals, he said.

“Prices normally fluctuate during the low and high seasons but if the cost of fuel increases we have to raise the ticket prices permanently,” Mr. Sithideth said.

Last year, the airline only slightly adjusted its prices, while this is the first time this year that it has had to make changes.

The airline will consider lowering prices should the cost of fuel decrease in the future, he said.

The increasing cost of fuel has caused the transportation sector to raise service fees and the prices of some products.

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce raised fuel prices in Laos last Thursday.

In Vientiane, the cost of regular petrol is now 10,490 kip a litre and diesel 9,370 kip a litre, while in Khammuan province regular petrol costs 10,540 kip and diesel 9,410 kip. In Savannakhet province, regular petrol costs 10,560 kip and diesel 9,420 kip.

In Champassak province, regular petrol now costs 10,550 kip and diesel 9,430 kip. In Bokeo province, regular petrol is 10,640 kip and diesel 9,490 kip, while in Xieng Khuang province, regular petrol is 10,760 kip and diesel 9,670 kip.
