Da Nang first VN city to link to world data alliance

The central city of Da Nang City will become the first locality in Viet Nam to join the Open Data Centre Alliance, an independent consortium of global IT leaders, from the begining of next year.

The move was announced by municipal Department of Information and Communications director Pham Kim Son and Intel's Viet Nam representative Pham Do Tuan at a meeting on Dec. 17.

Under the alliance formed this October, the city and Intel will develop "cloud computing". This new IT model delivers self-service IT consumption over the internet and flexible pay-as-you-go pricing.

The development is expected to support business growth and boost effective IT asset utilisation in the city.

"Intel Viet Nam recommended Da Nang join the alliance because the city has a clear and comprehensive commitment to IT development," said Tuan.

"The city has topped the nation's information and communications index for the last two years."

According to Son, Da Nang's IT industry turnover was expected to reach VND1.7 trillion (US$87.18 million) this year. Software exports were valued at $11 million with yearly growth in the sector averaging 25-30 per cent.

Tuan said the city needed to develop open IT standards, which were a global trend in communications.

He added he expected co-operation between Intel and relevant municipal authorities would help Da Nang become an IT hotspot for the country's central and central highlands regions.

Da Nang People's Committee Chairman Tran Van Minh asked authorities to focus on building policies to attract investment to the city's high-tech and IT parks next year to facilitate the industry's future development.

The new IT alliance is led by 10 global IT leaders including Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase and Lockheed Martin. Over 70 members from a broad array of industries are involved, including enterprise IT solutions providers and telecommunications companies.
