Price stabilisation plan for essential goods a success

A HCM City programme to keep prices and supply of essential goods stable until Lunar New Year is yielding results, according to the Department of Industry and Trade.

Vong A Loc, Head of the department's Planning and Finance Division, said prices are stable, even declining, while the supply of several essential goods like vegetables and fruits is plentiful.

With the rains approaching, conditions will become favourable for growing vegetables and fruits, he added.

The programme, approved by the People's Committee last month, seeks to keep the prices and supply of eight key items – rice, sugar, cooking oil, red meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables, eggs, and processed foods – steady.

Stocks of these goods are being maintained at a level of at least 20 per cent of the demand to head off any shortage or price volatility.

The People's Committee provides interest-free loans to the 14 food companies that are taking part in this year's programme, and in return they have to sell their goods at 10 per cent below market rates.

Nguyen Dinh Thai, Head of sales at Vinh Thanh Dat Food Joint Stock Company, said his company had registered to sell 2.5 million eggs a month but is actually selling 9 million.

Supermarket chain Co.op Mart, which has registered to sell all eight items, said sales is up 40 per cent compared to 12 months ago.

To facilitate things, the Department of Trade and Industry has publicised the participating companies' 20 points of sale.

"The department regularly sends inspectors to these sales points to confirm that the companies are selling … at their committed prices," Loc said.

It is also working with other departments and agencies to assist the participating companies with any problems they may face, he said.

For instance, it has asked the Department of Transport to help the companies transport goods to their sales points during rush hour.
