Workshop updates journalists on economic integration
The global economic-financial crisis and its effect on Vietnam were the main topics of a training workshop for journalists in Ho Chi Minh City on August 24.
The event was jointly organised by the VNA and the executive board of the EU-Vietnam Multilateral Trade Assistance Project (MUTRAP III).
Top local and overseas economists presented a number of reports to help the journalists update and gain a broader knowledge of the global economic and financial crisis as well as its impact on Vietnam ’s socio-economic development.
They put forward suggestions and solutions that would enable Vietnam’s macro-economy to develop and discussed measures that many major economies have taken to fix the crisis.
The experts pointed out the need to develop high-quality human resources as one of the urgent issues Vietnam must tackle in the post-crisis period.
The Director of the Vietnam Institute for Economics Dr. Tran Dinh Thien, said that the government responded quickly to the global economic downturn by effectively putting the interest rate subsidy progamme into action and ensuring social welfare, thereby mitigating any adverse impact on the population.
Vietnam has seen some signs of economic recovery, Thien said, suggesting that the country should restructure its economy based on better trained human resources and modern technologies.
Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, Industry and Trade Minister Assistant Nguyen Kim Son, MUTRAP III Chief Consultant Claudio Dordi, Rector of the Foreign Trade University Hoang Van Chau, and economist Pham Chi Lan also delivered speeches at the workshop.
