Japanese seminar focuses on investing in Vietnam

Opportunities and risks when doing business in Vietnam was the theme of a seminar on overseas investment, held in Tokyo on March 5.

Addressing the function, which attracted almost 200 delegates from Japanese businesses, Vietnamese ambassador Nguyen Phu Binh pointed to the fact that Vietnam considers Japan its most important economic partner.

By the end of 2008, Japanese investors registered investment totaling 17 billion USD in Vietnam, of which 10 billion was disbursed, Binh said.

In 2008 alone, two-way trade reached 17.3 billion USD, far surpassing the target set by the two Governments for 2010, the ambassador said.

Japan is also Vietnam’s largest individual donor, with combined committed ODA since 1997 standing at almost 11 billion USD, he added.

“The Vietnamese government always offers favourable conditions to enterprises from both countries to help them to conduct their business,” the diplomat confirmed.

According to Binh, the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two countries, including the recent visit to Vietnam by Crown Prince Naruhito and the upcoming visits to Japan by Vietnamese leaders, will help develop the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In spite of the global economic crisis, many Japanese investors hope to invest in Vietnam, taking advantage of the investment opportunities offered by the Southeast Asian country, said Kenji Saegusa, Senior Director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Industrial and Labour Affairs’ Commerce and Industry Division.

He also expressed his faith in the further development of the relationship between Vietnam and Japan.

Participants at the seminar also discussed the opportunities and risks in conducting business in Vietnam.
