HCM City companies cut staff by 10,000
Forty-six companies in Ho Chi Minh City have reduced their workforce by a total of 10,726 because of a cutback or shutdown in production due to the global financial crisis, according to the municipal Labour Federation.
Most of the companies are in the footwear, textile and garment, wooden furniture, electronics and food processing sectors.
The federation’s vocational training employment centre and district-level labour federations have been finding jobs for the laid-off employees in companies operating in similar sectors.
Of the 10,726 jobs lost, at least 8,367 of the workers have found new jobs.
Of the remaining 2,359 workers, 412 are either pregnant or ill and 1,947 have returned to their home provinces.
In a related matter, about 20,000 employees in the seafood industry in the Mekong Delta are working reduced hours because of production slowdowns.
Most of these companies are operating at only 30 percent to 50 percent of their capacity because of a shortage of input materials.
They have also rearranged schedules so that employees can rotate until the supply of input materials becomes abundant again.
Labour unions have also organised training courses for workers on their days off.
