Vietnam premier raises 3 proposals for SDGs implementation at G20 Summit
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh presented three proposals to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during a discussion on sustainable development and energy transition at the 2024 G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday.

At the event, chaired by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, many leaders agreed that the implementation of the SDGs is slowing down, pointing out the difficulties developing countries face in ensuring a fair energy transition.
Several leaders also proposed solutions to address economic inequality, enhance social welfare, and safeguard the environment.
They expressed unified support for policies promoting green finance and the mobilization of international resources to assist developing countries.
They affirmed the need to increase financial resources for the global energy transition, emphasizing the urgency to diversify investment capital sources for technology and infrastructure, and also strengthen public-private cooperation to promote energy transformation.
In his speech, PM Chinh reiterated Vietnam's consistent policy on sustainable development and the country's commitment to never sacrifice social welfare, progress, social equality, or the environment for mere economic growth.
Vietnam pledges to make every effort alongside the international community in achieving the net-zero emissions goal before 2050, contributing to the development of a green, clean, beautiful, and sustainable world for future generations, he affirmed.
The PM brought forward three proposals, each helping accelerate the SDGs implementation, ensuring they will be fulfilled on schedule.
The first is to focus on promoting three key transformations, namely digital, green, and energy, he said, stressing that science, technology, and innovation play a crucial role and are key to sustainable development.
In the second proposal, the PM concentrated on promoting investment in people, as well as paying attention to progress, fairness, social security, and environmental protection.
The official emphasized Brazil's commitment to reducing inequality, particularly for women and children, during its G20 Presidency.
These efforts aim to promote social justice and inclusive development, which he described as essential prerequisites for achieving sustainable development and a successful energy transition, making sure no one is left behind.
Finally, PM Chinh proposed creating models for innovative financial cooperation and efficient investment, especially public-private partnerships, to unlock, mobilize, and effectively use all resources for sustainable development and energy transition.
The Vietnamese leader’s proposals were met with widespread praise and agreement.
PM Chinh also announced that Vietnam will host the Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) Summit in April 2025, demonstrating the country’s commitment to furthering the implementation of the SDGs and accelerating the energy transition.
