Bank stocks help VN-Index inch up

The solid growth of bank stocks helped the benchmark VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange rose a fractional 0.01%, or 0.14 points, to close at 1,277.07 points, July 28.

There were nearly 407 million shares worth some VND13 trillion changing hands on the southern bourse, falling 28% in volume and 30% in value against the previous session. Losing stocks outnumbered winning ones by 214 to 141.

Some 45 million shares worth VND1.58 trillion were traded in block deals.

Most bank stocks gained ground, with VCB and OCB being the biggest gainers, growing 2.1% to VND97,000 and 3.15% to VND29,500, respectively.

Besides, CTG was up 1.2% to VND32,900, BID up 0.75% to VND40,500 and VIB up 1.51% to VND40,300.

There were only five bank stocks losing ground. VPB lost over 1%, while TCB, STB, EIB and SSB fell approximately 0.5%.

Other major contributors included property enterprise VIC, which rose 0.86% to VND105,200, and steelmaker HPG, up 1.08% to close at VND46,700.

Steel stocks also had good liquidity, with HPG and HSG seeing 21.2 million and 12.6 million shares changing hands, respectively.

Following positive information announced this morning by chairman of the board of directors Dang Thanh Tam, property stock KBC surged 3.99% to VND33,900 with more than 13 million shares traded.

On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index inched up 0.08%, or 0.25 points, to close at 306.25 points, though decliners outnumbered gainers by 112 to 67.

There were 74.8 million shares worth some VND1.88 trillion changing hands on the northern market, falling 20.8% in volume and 15.3% in value compared with the previous session.

Bank stocks were the major gainers, with NVB surging 3.3% to VND19,000, while SHB rose 0.4% to VND26,900.

Other contributors included securities firm VND, stone processor VCS and industrial development company IDC, which rose 0.2% to VND43,600, 0.67% to VND119,700 and 2.37% to VND34,600.

In contrast, petroleum stock PVS lost 0.82% to end at VND24,100 and real estate stock DXS fell 3.35% to VND26,000.

Some other large-cap stocks such as securities stocks SHS and MBS also lost ground.
