Development on Royal Group land being erected at top speed

Not long after having fenced off a large plot of land along Sothearos Boulevard, just behind Rose Condo, a still-in-progress construction of a six-storey building structure that started about two months ago has now arisen.

A worker, who asked not to be named, told Post Property earlier this week, “I’m not quite sure of what we’re building, but I think it’s going to be a condo.”

He added, “It could be taller, but from what we’ve been informed, [the developers] just keep it six storeys high for now.”

Clearing of the land had first begun in March, after fencing it off from the view of the public travelling along Sothearos Boulevard. Since the start of October, the building’s foundation had been steadily erected, and its structure now stands at six storeys within a matter of two months.

While the plot of land belongs to Royal Group, the conglomerate had not – in previous reports – confirmed whether the project was theirs or not. Representatives of the group could not be reached for comment.

“I think the other workers here don’t know much about [the development] either since we only come to work according to the designated tasks and can’t understand the Chinese [supervisors and workers],” the worker continued, adding that they understood the working procedures from hand signs and gestures.

On the other hand, the construction site’s interpreter – acting as translator between the Cambodian workers and Chinese employees – said, “It’s not a condo. The building will be a shopping mall where each story is projected to sell a particular product.”

He also spoke on condition of anonymity, and said that the completion of the building is slated for March 2017.

When asked whether or not the building would be the only one, the interpreter said, “Another apartment project is on its way behind this building, and booking might be available starting from the end of this year.”

Seng Lot, spokesman for the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, said, “I don’t have any knowledge regarding this building.”

It was previously reported that City Hall said they were unaware of any proposed projects for that land plot. Chen Bunthoeun, spokesperson for City Hall, refused to comment.
