Customs to use GPS to monitor goods transport
The General Department of Viet Nam Customs will use GPS to monitor and inspect goods being transferred by containers between ports, temporarily imported for re-export and transit in the country.
The process will be piloted in Ha Noi, the northern Hai Phong City and Quang Ninh Province from December 15 for one year.
The department said the move was aimed at supervising the transport period of goods.
The monitoring system will use computers or tablets and smartphones linked to the related authority's server.
GPS devices will be installed on container trucks to avoid smuggling and commercial fraud during the transportation process. GPS chips are capable of transmitting warning signals when the containers are unsealed or opened, as well as in locating the truck's position during its journey.
This monitoring system will record the entire route taken by the containers and immediately send warning messages to the related customs agencies if the trucks go in the wrong direction or exceed the parking time limit. It will also report about the container trucks' journey, the time schedule and parking locations.
The monitoring data will be stored in the system for five years, the department said.
