Malaysia files dumping action on plastic wrap

The Malaysian government has instituted a dumping investigation of biaxially-oriented polypropylene films, a kind of plastic wrap used in food processing that it imports from Viet Nam, Taiwan, Thailand, mainland China and Indonesia, the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade's Competition Authority announced.

The investigation was launched after San Miguel Yamamura Plastic Films Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company, claimed that the Malaysian industry had been seriously injured due to alleged price undercutting by these countries.

The Viet Nam Competition Authority has urged domestic businesses involved in the investigation to actively co-operate with Malaysian authorities to avoid unwanted duties and fines.

Vietnamese producers and exporters would be required to answer a questionnaire from Malaysia by September 5, the authority said. Under Malaysian law, if relevant parties do not provide necessary information before the deadline, the Government would decide an anti-dumping duty based on available information.

Earlier last week, Vietnamese galvanised and colour-coated steel piece manufacturers were also warned by the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry Federation about a probable lawsuit. Viet Nam Steel Association chairman Pham Chi Cuong said some Malaysian companies had warned about surging imports of colour-coated steel pieces from Viet Nam into Malaysia in recent months.
