HCM City to open export display centre

The HCM City People's Committee has shown the green light for setting up a centre to display export items.

The centre would also be used to organise conferences, seminars, and training courses, Pham Ngoc Hung, deputy chairman of the Union of Business Associations, which made the proposal to the city administration, said.

His association was looking for a piece of land measuring 2-5ha to build it, he said.

A plot at one end of Nguyen Van Linh Street in District 8 seemed the most suitable, he said.

The cost of building it would be borne mostly by domestic exporters, but foreign investment could be sought if necessary, he said.

Foreign exhibition organisers would be invited to take a look at Vietnamese export products once the facility is ready, he said.

The plan has received support from many companies. Dien Quang Hiep, director of Mifaco, which exports furniture to the EU, said partners from many countries could come to the centre to explore co-operation opportunities.

Wood-based products need large spaces for regular display, so his company would register for a space in the new centre, he said.

Deputy chairman of the HCM City Handicraft and Wood Industry Association, Tran Quoc Manh, said many countries have set up such centres to display their export products.

A venue to exhibit export items has been existing in HCM City, a showroom of the Investment and Trade Promotion Centre, but it has not been effective because its small means each item can only be displayed for a short period.

Manh hopes the new centre would be larger
