EDL exceeds expectations

Electricite du Laos (EDL) says this year's energy generation, income, expenditures and profits will be larger than initial expectations.

“We expect our income to be 2,667.86 billion kip, which is 102 percent of projections,” the EDL Managing Director Mr Sisavath Thiravong said at a meeting in Vientiane last week.

Mr Sisavath said the expenditure will also increase to 2,576.56 billion kip, that will represent 106 percent of the initial target.

“The profit before taxes will increase to 91.30 billion kip. This figure includes dividends,” Mr Sisavath said.

EDL believes the income, expenditures and profits will increase this year because of increased business in the first six months.

It reported last week that it had made income and expenditures of 102 percent and 107 percent in the first six months of this year, which was more than anticipated.

Mr Sisavath said EDL had a total income of 1,277.83 billion kip and expenditures of 1,227.42 billion kip in the first six months of this year.

“We have already made a profit before tax of 50.41 billion kip, including the dividend,” Mr Sisavath said.

The report for the first six months noted that currently there are 15 hydropower plants that have a combined installed capacity of 2,519.70 megawatts (MW), including the EDL-Gen's 7 plants with an installed capacity of 381MW, EDL's 4 plants with 3.70MW. The remaining 4 plants are independent power producers (IPP).

“We also hope the electricity generation will rise to 1,892.29 million kWh this year, including EDL's generation of 17.76 million kWh,” Mr Sisavath said.

The report noted that in the first six months of this year EDL and IPP could generate electricity totaling 813.86 million kWh; this included the EDL's 7.89 million kWh.

“In the last six months of this year we hope to have energy generation of 1,078.43 million kWh. This will include EDL's generation of 9.87 million kWh,” Mr Sisavath said.
