Cambodia's construction sector investment grows by 5 pct in Q1

Cambodia's construction sector attracted a total investment of 342 million U.S. dollars in the first three months of 2012, a 5-percent rise from 324 million U.S. dollars from a year earlier, according to statistics of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction released on Tuesday.

During the January-March period this year, the ministry had granted licenses to 489 construction projects nationwide.

Lao Tip Seiha, director of the ministry's construction department, said those projects include commercial buildings, residential units, apartments, hotels, agricultural processing plants and garment factories.

Foreign investors in the projects are mostly from Malaysia, South Korea, China, and Vietnam, he said.

"The growth in the sector is thanks to better economic environment, political stability and good security, which are the main factors to build trust among investors, " he added.

The construction sector is one of the four pillars supporting the country's economy. Last year, the country attracted a total investment of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars for 2,129 projects.
