Country calls on US businesses for support
Viet Nam's Ambassador to the US, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, has called on American firms to support Viet Nam's acceptance into the US Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), and recognition for its increasing openness to the market economy.
At a talks with representatives from about 50 US firms in Washington on Wednesday, Ambassador Cuong said that any support would increase co-operation between the two countries and speed up negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
He urged the American Business Association to lobby the US Congress and the administration to recognise the benefits of Viet Nam participation in TPP negotiations, particularly for the apparel and footwear sectors.
Cuong stressed the importance of the TPP agreements for member countries, including the US and Viet Nam, in the context of strengthening trade ties in the Asia-Pacific region.
He asked US firms to continue to invest and trade with Viet Nam, pointing out that the US is Viet Nam's largest trading partner and that economic co-operation has made great strides in recent years.
Calman Cohen, a representative of the US Business Association, confirmed the continued support of the association throughout the TPP negotiation process.
