VN-Index levitates on vigorous buying

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index advanced for four straight trading sessions to open week in upbeat sentiment on March 5 as investors rushed to buy shares on speculation of further gain.

The measure of 303 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange rocketed 4.01 per cent, or 17.61 points, to close at 457.21 points, the highest since September 19, 2011, with 287 winners, 16 losers, and 5 stocks remained unchanged.

The gauge added 3.8 per cent last week and 30 per cent in the year to date, trimming last year’s loss of 28 per cent.

Trading on the city bourse improved by 27 per cent in volume and 60 per cent in value over the previous trading session as more than 103.33 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND1.98 trillion.

The fifth largest listed lender Vietnam Commercial Joint Stock Export Import Bank or Eximbank (EIB) was the most active share in volume with 8.1 million shares changing hands.

Ocean Group Joint Stock Company (OGC) followed with 4.37 million shares.

Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industrial and Trade or VietinBank (CTG) came next with 2.62 million shares traded.

Viky Plastic Joint Stock Company (VKP) hiked 14.29 per cent to close at VND800.

Cadovimex Seafood Import-Export & Processing Joint Stock Company (CAD) escalated 12.5 per cent to close at VND900.

Basa Joint Stock Company (BAS) enhanced 10 per cent to close at VND1,100.

Song Ba Joint Stock Company (SBA) collapsed 6.38 per cent to close at VND4,400.

Mekophar Chemical Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company (MKP) marched south 4.95 per cent to close at VND49,900.

Duyen Hai Multi Modal Transport Joint Stock Company (TCO) weakened 4.76 per cent to close at VND10,000.

The VN30 Index - a free-float adjusted, market cap-weighted index of 30 stocks with the highest market value and liquidity on the exchange - soared 21.4 points, or 4.25 per cent, to end at 524.94. Among its 30 members, 29 stocks rallied, and 1 closed unmoved.

The Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north sprang 5.66 per cent, or 4.06 points, to close at 75.78 points with 353 winners, 16 losers, and 6 stocks treaded water. Around 40.05 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND479.34 billion.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares edged up 1.49 per cent, or 0.52 points, to close at 35.4 points. A total of 378,277 shares changed hands at VND2.42 billion.
