Mobile operators to integrate
Vinaphone and Mobiphone, subsidiaries of Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications (VNPT), are likely to merge as part of a VNPT restructure proposal, said Vice Director Phan Hoang Duc.
According to the proposal, VNPT will maintain the two mobile network systems, infrastructures and clients with numbers starting 090, 091, 093 and 094.
According to VNPT, three separate proposals will be submitted to the government for final approval, which include the privatisation of both Vinaphone and Mobiphone, the integration of both operators and the privatisation of VNPT.
In his interview, Duc said that the restructure of VNPT was to conform with the Telecom Law which had been validated since last June, stipulating that once an institution or individual owns more than 20 per cent of stakes of a telco, he is not allowed to possess more than 20 per cent of chartered capital or stakes of another telco operating on the same market.
This means that VNPT will have to choose between the integration of both Vinaphone and Mobiphone and the privatisation of one of two operators with an allowance of maintaining its 20 per cent of chartered capital.
Last year, Vinaphone and Mobiphone accounted for around 58 per cent of the mobile market share, with more than 80 million subscribers, while Viettel Telecom, the biggest operator, comprised about 36 per cent.
