Malaysia eyes further investment in Laos

Deputy Prime Minister Asang Laoly met with the Director of I.Z.A. Construction Co. of Malaysia, Mr Farouk Anwar, and the Ambassador of Malaysia to Laos, Mr Dato Than Tai Hing, on Friday to discuss Malaysian investment in Laos.

Mr Farouk Anwar.

During the meeting, the company expressed interest in investing in road and building construction, hydropower, industrial processing and airports.

Mr Anwar told Vientiane Times that he looks forward to providing investment in these sectors.

He said the company will make it a priority to focus on road, hydropower and airport investment as long as the Lao government gives them the green light.

Building an attractive and functional airport in Laos is very important, as it would impress visitors from around the world, he added.

However, the purpose of this visit is to observe the local market, gather information for Malaysian businesspeople interested in investing in Laos, and continue to build the relationship between Laos and Malaysia.

Mr Dato Than Tai Hing said that currently Malaysia is the ninth largest investor in Laos. He hopes the meeting will lead Malaysian businesses to increase investment in Laos, perhaps becoming the eighth or seventh largest investor in the future.

Mr Asang said he was pleased to attend the meeting and was willing to help Malaysian investors begin projects in Laos.

He also pointed out the importance of cooperation among Asean countries.

Mr Asang thanked the company, which will install drainage in Vientiane in preparation for the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit in November.
