Equities market wraps year in light note

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index rebounded on December 30, lowering this year’s loss as blue-chip stocks unexpectedly gained ground.

The shares of 301 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange recovered 0.3 percent, or 1.04 points, to close at 351.55 points. This year, the gauge lost 27.5 percent and hit the lowest close since May 5, 2009, on December 27.

On the benchmark, 184 stocks climbed, 57 retreated, while 65 remained unchanged.

Trading on the city bourse rose by 16 percent in volume, and 45 percent in value over the previous day as 56.2 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND809 billion.

The fourth largest listed bank Saigon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) was the most active share in volume with 3.6 million shares changing hands.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (HAG) took second place with 1.25 million shares.

Viet Nhat Medical Instrument Joint Stock Company (JVC) remained at third place with 1.17 million shares traded.

Viky Plastic Joint Stock Company (VKP) sprang 12.5 percent to close at VND900.

South Vietnam Container Shipping Joint Stock Company (VSG) resurrected 6.25 percent to close at VND1,700.

Saigon Beverages Joint Stock Company (TRI) and Ninh Van Bay Travel Real Estate Joint Stock Company (NVT) both surged 5.56 percent to VND1,900.

Basa Joint Stock Company (BAS) tumbled 8.33 percent to VND1,100.

Quoc Cuong Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (QCG) dived 4.96 percent to finish at VND13,400.

Viet - Han Corporation (VHG) trimmed 4.88 percent to close at VND3,900.

Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north revived 1.96 percent, or 1.13 points, to close at 58.74 points. This year, the measure declined 48 percent. Around 34.88 million shares changed hands at a value of VND283.69 billion.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares regained 0.21 percent, or 0.07 points, to 33.74 points at 2:10pm local time. A total of 374,150 shares changed hands at a value of VND4.34 billion.

Vietnam’s stock markets close for New Year holidays until January 3.
